Houston’s Best Halal Restaurants: A Mom’s Guide to Family-Friendly Dining

As a mom of three in Houston — two teenagers with strong opinions and one elementary schooler who still negotiates every bite — finding halal restaurants that work for the whole family is a beautiful, chaotic sport.

Luckily, the Greater Houston Area is home to one of the most diverse halal food scenes in North America. From authentic Indian-Pakistani comfort food to Texas-style halal BBQ and buzzing Yemeni coffee houses, we are incredibly spoiled for choice.

This guide is the result of years of trial, error, and a lot of takeout containers. I hope it saves you time and gets your family to more great meals faster.

This is our home cuisine and where we have the highest standards. These are the spots that actually meet them.

Aga’s Restaurant & Catering

Aga’s is the undisputed king of Houston’s desi food scene. It is always loud and bustling, which is a plus for moms—no one will notice if your youngest drops a fork or makes a scene! However, They only take reservations for larger groups (10 or more people).

We are huge fans of Aga’s catering too. Their service at our nephew’s wedding was impeccable. Ordering for small family parties is a breeze with their online ordering system for party trays and on-time preparation.

❇️Mom Tip: Be prepared to wait for a table, especially if going on weekends. It’s probably not the best choice if your little ones are getting cranky and need food now. Once inside, the service is pretty fast though, despite the crowds.

Lasbela Restaurant & Catering

If you are craving traditional, rich Pakistani flavors in a beautiful family-style setting, Lasbela delivers. The owner Mr. Aziz Noorani welcomes everyone warmly and personally oversees the operations. We often choose Lasbela for family celebrations with our large, extended family.

Karahi Boys

This is my husband’s favorite spot for all kinds of karahis and other desi dishes. The interior passes the teen “vibe check,” and watching the fresh karahis sizzle makes the short wait completely worth it. Don’t forget to order the family naan.

Meerut BBQ House Restaurant

Meerut BBQ House started off as a food truck and expanded into a full service restaurant in Sugar land. The food truck can be found in the Moosa Colony food truck park.

Both locations are great for for traditional BBQ items like tikkas and kababs.

🍔American Halal Favorites

This category belongs to my teenagers. They discovered halal Texas BBQ and gourmet burgers and there was no going back.

Levant BBQ

Levant combines traditional Texas smokehouse BBQ like brisket and ribs with Mediterranean sides. It is one of the very few fully halal restaurants in town which offer Texas BBQ.

The ambiance is casual with the option of outdoor seating. My youngest loves their free ice cream at the end of the meal.

❇️Mom Tip: The cafeteria style service means that there’s no wait time to receive your order – a definite plus when you have hungry kids.

⭐Our Family Favorite: Habibi feast (1 lb Brisket, ½ lb Turkey, ½ Chicken, 1 Sausage, 4 Sides, Bread, Pickle & Onion, 8oz BBQ Sauce)

Howdy Hot Chicken

Crispy Nashville-style halal hot chicken is always a hit with teenagers.

Mom Tip: The spice level is no joke. I stick to the ‘No heat’ option for my youngest.

With kids of all ages, it’s hard to go wrong with halal burgers, fries and hot dogs. My teens would eat here every week if I let them. They have multiple locations to choose from including Sugar Land, Katy, Pearland and Houston (Westheimer Rd).

When we are looking for healthier, less greasy and milder options, we turn towards Mediterranean cuisine and these classic spots rarely disappoint.

Sayad Mediterranean Kitchen

This Palestinian owned Mediterranean restaurant has long been our favorite for family gatherings and treating guests who are visiting from out of town and are looking for Mediterranean cuisine. They moved their location a few years ago and while we preferred their old location, the new one offers the same fare.

Fadi’s Mediterranean Grill

With multiple locations, in addition to the Sugar Land one which we frequent most often, Fadi’s is arguably Houston’s most popular Mediterranean restaurant.

The cafeteria/buffet style layout means there is zero waiting time for food to be cooked, so you can sit down and eat immediately. All of us love the freshly baked pita bread so much that we can eat it plain when it is fresh out of the oven. I also love the variety of fresh salads.

The Butcher’s Grille

We save this one for special occasions as it has a more upscale vibe which means I have to spend a considerable amount of time arguing with my elementary schooler to change from his crocs and shorts into shoes and jeans. It is known for its halal steaks and Lebanese grilled meats.

From authentic Vietnamese, Chinese & Thai to Indo-Chinese fusion, there are some great options in Houston.

Ly’s Kitchen Sugar Land

Whenever we think of Chinese food the first name that pops up in our mind is Ly’s Kitchen. We have been loyal patrons from the time they were known as Jade Ly – a tiny place near New Territory, Sugar Land offering authentic Vietnamese and Chinese halal food. I am glad they opened a bigger location.

Thai Town

From soups and stir fries to Thai curries, Thai Town in Sugar Land is our favorite spot when we are craving Thai flavors for a casual family dinner.

🚚Food Truck Parks

If my family cannot decide on one particular restaurant or is looking for a late night meal or snack, the food truck parks in the Greater Houston area are what we turn to.

Moosa Colony Food Truck Park

If you grew up in India or Pakistan, the vibes will definitely remind you of the street food scene back home. It might not exactly be the kind of aesthetic vibes that teens are looking for their Instagram feeds, but there is definitely something for everyone there – from chaat, bun kabab to NYC cart style chicken over rice, gyros, tacos and burgers. The place has a vibrant energy during the weekends and sometimes there’s live music too in the evening.

Boat Basin Food Truck Park

📍14625 Beechnut St, Houston, TX 77083

This is another food truck park not too far from Moosa Colony which has similar vibes. There is a rotating selection of desi street food, burgers, tacos, desserts and more.

❇️Mom Tip: There is a play area for kids and lots of outdoor seating.

Houston’s Yemeni café scene is not to be missed. These spots have become our family’s go-to for winding down after a big meal or when we need a late night pick me up. Yemeni coffee houses are especially popular during Ramadan nights when everyone needs a caffeine boost to stay awake after taraweeh.

The teens opt for coffee while my husband goes for the Adeni Chai or Karak Chai. My youngest gets a chilled refresher or dessert.

Qahwah House

The ambiance definitely passes the Gen Z vibe check. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and it is open till late.

We usually visit their Richmond location and the place is always bustling with energy. The place is packed during Ramadan nights.

Haraz has a beautifully designed spacious interior which is perfect for hanging out with family at night or enjoying a relaxed afternoon with other Moms.

BakerLand Cafe

This beautifully designed Turkish bakery and cafe offers an extensive menu ranging from pastas, soups, sandwiches and salads to Turkish tea, coffee, mocktails, milkshakes and desserts. You can basically go there any time of the day and you will find something.

Sleek Creperie & Cafe

This is the kids’ favorite spot for those late night dessert cravings. It is open late and is known for its decadent chocolate treats. It also serves breakfast items but not all of the breakfast items are halal.
