My elder daughter Sofia had been asking us to take her for strawberry picking ever since she had seen her favorite cartoon character Caillou doing so in one of the episodes. It’s amazing how much influence these Caillous and Doras can have on a preschooler’s life. Yesterday, we finally got a chance to take her to a picturesque strawberry farm about 25 kms from our home in Mississauga, Ontario. It was a bright, sunny day and even though it was a weekday there were a lot of families out there enjoying picking fresh, juicy strawberries. Here are some pictures I took at the strawberry farm:
One of the first things I made with the strawberries was my favorite smoothie – the strawberry banana smoothie. Smoothies are the perfect kind of food for a busy Mom like me – quick, easy and nutritious. Strawberries are an excellent source of dietary fiber, antioxidants and Vitamin C while bananas are rich in potassium, vitamin A and B6 .
Smoothies don’t involve any rocket science but for those of you who would like to know how I make my Strawberry Banana Smoothie here’s the recipe:
Strawberry Banana Smoothie Recipe
3/4 glass milk/ yogurt+water
Honey or sugar according to taste (I prefer the natural goodness of honey)
Few drops vanilla extract
Blend all ingredients together in blender. Add ice cubes to chill. Enjoy ! Makes about two glasses. For those on a diet you can use low fat milk/yogurt to make it healthier and of course, you can increase or decrease the amount of fruits to make it thick or thin according to your preference.
You can come up with any concoction of fruit and milk/yogurt to enjoy at any time of the day. We usually have smoothies late afternoon/evening but many people prefer them for breakfast or as a replacement for lunch (usually those on a diet).
